MLB: Jason Bay Prefers Boston

Jason Bay’s agent tells the Providence Journal that while he has talked with other teams about his client the Red Sox still remain his top choice. That is good news for the Sox who have scrambling to find a Plan B in the event they fail to re-sign Bay.
It is believed Bay is seeking somewhere in the neighborhood of $60 million over four years which is definitely a figure GM Theo Epstein would be comfortable in giving someone of Bay’s ilk. However, given his preference to stay in Boston do not expect him to sign before free agency begins next week on the 20th.
Since this is Bay’s first opportunity to test the market he prefers to do so in an effort to see what the market will bear for someone like him. It is believed that if the Cardinals fail to re-sign Matt Holliday or feel they can not afford him that they would be interested in Bay as a potential replacement. The Mariners are also said to be interested in Bay’s services as well.
There is also some sentiment that the Yankees may be interested but it seems unlikely that they are going to make any significant roster changes given they are coming off a World Series win and already have a lofty payroll for next season and will need to figure out how much they are going to have to pay Derek Jeter when his deal expires and young players like Robinson Cano, Joba Chamberlain, and Phil Hughes are going to be due significant pay bumps in the near future.
