The Memphis Grizzlies continue to add to their collection of misfit toys by signing oft-troubled Jamaal Tinsley to a contract over the weekend. With Tinsley coming on board one begins to wonder if Allen Iverson’s days in Memphis are truly over.
Tinsley is a curious signing given he has not stepped foot on a NBA court since the middle of the 2007-08 season and the Pacers essentially paid him to stay away from the team last season. He comes with a ton of off-court baggage and one wonders why they would bring him in when they are worried about the type of people O. J. Mayo runs with. Tinsley has a reputation of his own for haning out with unsavory sorts which led to his problems in Indiana.
He could be a good addition, however, if he has put his off-the-court issues behind him and is truly focusing on getting his basketball career back on track, though it is somewhat curious he chose Memphis over the Cavs, whom he is rumored to have worked out for last week as well. He is a proven play-maker adept at setting up his teammates with scoring opportunities who Mike Conley and Marcus Williams could probably learn a thing or two from.
With the Grizzlies wasting so little time to sign another point guard since Iverson took a leave of absence last weekend one begins to wonder if the Grizz think he will be back or not. Memphis GM Chris Wallace says Iverson’s status with the team has nothing to do with this signing but one has to find that hard to believe given the Grizzlies have not lost any point guards due to injury in the past week.
