It looks as though the rumors swirling around Philadelphia about Elton Brand being on the trading block will be coming to an end as Marreese Speights is now expected to miss six to eight weeks with a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his left knee.
Brand’s early struggles combined with Speights getting off to a strong start led to speculation that the Sixers were looking to deal Brand to clear the way for Eddie Jordan to insert Speights into the starting lineup.
The rumors about the Sixers looking to deal Brand seem a bit out there given he still has three years left on his contract and is not even scoring 10 points a game this season. I cannot imagine there are many teams lining up at the GM Ed Stafnaski’s door to take Brand’s contract off their hands and the Sixers would likely have to take a nasty contract back in return to unload Brand on someone.
Losing Speights is a big blow to a Sixers team struggling to find any low post scoring this season and will likely look to Jason Smith to pick up some of the low post scoring off the bench while Speights is out.
