The Buffalo Bills job is officially one of the least desirable in the league, right up there with the Oakland Raiders. After taking several weeks to talk with several candidates rumored to include Mike Shanahan, Bill Cowher, Marty Schottenheimer, Bryan Schottenheimer, Leslie Frazier, and Jim Harbaugh the Bills finally settled on Chan Gailey Tuesday.
To say this is a rather uninspired hire is an understatement. The Bills went on record saying they wanted someone with head coaching experience so it stands to reason why they talked to a lot of the candidates they reportedly talked to, but, Chan Gailey? He is the best you could come up with? Really?
I was of the impression that Bills owner Ralph Wilson’s desire was to win a Super Bowl Championship before he passes on. I am sorry to say that Gailey is not the guy to get the Bills back to glory. The guy is as mediocre as they come in terms of head coaches regardless of what Bill Cowher thinks of him.
I can understand why the more established names they talked to were not interested in the job. The Bills have quite a bit of work to do personnel-wise to get back into contention. They are in dire need of an upgrade at quarterback, the run defense was atrocious this year and they be in need of depth at wide receiver if Terrell Owens moves on to other opportunities.
Sure Gailey got the Cowboys to the playoffs his two years in Dallas, but, he went 0-2 and went 10-6 and 8-8 in those two seasons. Those is not exactly an overwhelming record. After Dallas he landed at Georgia Tech and led them to a rousing 44-32 record in his six years there. He went 7-5 or 7-6 in five of those years and went 9-5 once. He has never, ever, had two consecutive years as a NFL or Division I-A head coach where his teams were anything special. He essentially beats up on the teams with losing records and loses to the teams with winning records.
The thing that truly boggles my mind is with Leslie Frazier sitting out there who reportedly had an interest in the job why go with Gailey? Frazier has gotten ringing endorsements from both Tony Dungy and Colts GM Bill Polian as a head coaching candidate. In fact Polian has gone on record saying if not for Jim Caldwell being groomed to assume Dungy’s spot as head coach Frazier would be the Colts coach right now.
I do not understand why the Bills chose to go with yet another mediocre re-tread of a coach who has never won anything and probably never will as their head coach. If you are going to settle on Gailey you may as well have kept Dick Jauron. Why go with the mediocre coach you do not know instead of the unknown in Frazier who everyone around the league agrees is going to be a good head coach?
