Lions Ink Burleson

The Detroit Lions made the first plunge into free agency this year signing veteran receiver Nate Burleson to a 5-year deal reportedly worth $25 million.

Burleson is a nice addition to a Lions team that has struggled to find a suitable receiver opposite Calvin Johnson ever since Mike Furrey and Roy Williams left town.  Burleson is coming off a year in which he caught 63 balls for the Seattle Seahawks.

He has been an interesting case over the years.  As a 3rd round pick out of Nevada-Reno Burleson established himself as a big play guy averaging 15 yards per catch and scoring 11 touchdowns on 97 catches his first two years in the league.  Since then he has struggled at times with injuries and has failed to duplicate the season he had during his second year in the league in 2004 when he caught 68 passes for 1,006 yards and 9 touchdowns for the Vikings.

If healthy Burleson should give the Lions a guy who can give them 60 catches opposite Johnson next season.  However, one wonders if Burleson is worth that kind of an investment.
